The Right Decision

A person deciding which direction to go

Every single day you are faced with having to make decisions. Most of the time these decisions are relatively insignificant, such as what to wear, what to have for dinner or whether to have that extra slice of cake! I'm not saying these decisions are necessarily easy but nothing drastic is going to happen if what you decide isn't quite right.

Sometimes, however, the decision to be made is bigger and with, potentially, much greater consequences. Your desire to make the right decision becomes paramount. The pressure of making the right decision can often generate heightened anxiety, resulting in worry, "what if" scenarios, sleepless nights, a short temper and, at its worst, panic attacks. In fact, the longer you take to ensure you make the right decision, the more anxious you can become.

In my experience, I have found that indecision is a major contributing factor to anxiety. Not making a decision about something leaves you in a perpetual state of uncertainty, which didn't exist before and won't exist afterwards. This uncertainty can leave you feeling vulnerable and all because you are scared of making the wrong decision.

Most people have heard of the fight or flight response to danger. The brain is wired to make the body take action when faced with danger or stressors. Adrenaline and blood are sent to areas of the body to make us stronger to win a fight or run away. These actions help reset the body to a calmer, more natural state of being. But, there is a third response discussed a lot more now, which is the freeze response. When there is nothing to defeat or flee from, such as the fear of making the right decision, then you can end up stuck. Not taking action means that nothing changes and the body stays on alert, waiting to fight or run.

Putting all of the emphasis on making the right decision can be very stressful, so instead of making the right decision, make the decision right! I'll say that again. Instead of making the right decision, make the decision right.

It's difficult, if not impossible, to know what's going to happen in the future. With the best will in the world, you will never know 100% whether you are making the right decision. No matter how much you plan, life has a way of not turning out as you expect. My dad always says, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans!" Whatever you decide to do, make it right.

Abraham Lincoln said, "The best way to predict the future is to create it". You have no way of knowing whether it will be the right decision or not, so make your decision and then do everything within your power to make it the right one. Instead of hoping for the best, create the outcome you want as you go along and if things aren't going as planned, simply make another decision!
